One of the most important things in preparing for an interview is getting to know what you’re applying for. Perhaps you’re applying for a job or a position in a specific industry. Most likely, the company you’re applying to has a website. The best things to do before an interview is to know exactly what the company or position is looking for. Find some background information about the goals of the organization and the responsibilities of your desired position so that you’ll know exactly what they’re looking for in applicants. Furthermore, it’ll show that you’re prepared if you’re able to refer to different points from their own website.
Background Information: Yourself
Recognizing your own strong points or “selling points” is also important when doing an interview. Perhaps you’re a very strong problem solver or are extremely organized. Whatever the case, make sure you know why you’re the most suitable candidate for the position. Not only do you want to have these points in mind, you want to be able to articulate them effectively as well. You need to mention your strong points and previous experiences to appropriately answer interview questions. They need to know that you’re the most suitable candidate. Make sure you’re talking about yourself and your experiences in response to the right questions, or else it just looks like you’re flexing unnecessarily!
Preparing answers for generic questions can be one of the most beneficial things to do in terms of calming your nerves. Most interviews will begin with some version of “tell me about yourself”, “what makes you qualified for this position?” or “why are you interested in our organization”. Preparing vague points to talk about in response to such questions is a good way to go into the interview feeling prepared. It is also a good way to ease yourself into the interview as you are able to nail of the first questions they give you.
Generally speaking, applicants should bring a copy of their resume to the interview. Although most organizations that ask for an interview will already have a copy, bringing a resume shows preparedness and is good interview etiquette. Additionally, sending thank-you notes or emailing them to the interviewer shows appreciation for the time and effort they went through to review your application and set up an interview time for you.
Another important point to remember is that not all interviews and applications are going to go the way you want. It’s important to keep your goals long-term and realize there are always going to be more opportunities. An essential aspect to interviews is to not let the results get to you.
